Resistance

Donald Trump is President.

Alternative facts are a thing now.

Safeguarding water resources are part of environmentalism that’s gotten out of hand.

Neo-Nazis call themselves the Alt-Right. Meanwhile the lower case kkk that had been badly hiding in plain sight are now coming out of the woodwork, hoods and all. Heck, a clan leader backed Trump and celebrated his victory as their victory.

As our world becomes more and more Orwellian and storm clouds gather above us, I am reminded of the song Resistance by Muse.

It reminds us that one form of resistance is and has always been love, despite the world we live on falling apart and our need to step up to the plate and become our own heroes, lead our own resistance. Because even this darkness that has descended upon is will end.
Resistance.

Every good Star Wars fan knows that when things are bad and Snoke and his First Order are marching towards us, we must resist. We must have hope to believe that our resistance will make a difference, as those that marched in the Women’s Marches around the world did.

Like The Rebellion before it, The Resistance is built on hope. The hope and belief that we can be better. That we are better. That somewhere deep inside us, we can make a change, make a difference. Be it by keeping our faith in the good we have within, or voicing and making known our opposition to tyranny.
We must resist. We cannot let evil win.

We cannot.

Nor can we allow climate change denialism to go without being addressed.

Trump has decided that Environmentalism is out of control and to gag The Environmental Protection Agency.

But we all saw last year in South Africa how the rains didn’t come when they were meant to and how drought ravaged the country; around the world we saw crazy storms, the Arctic sea ice not forming and in Antarctica a sheet of ice falling into the sea.

We have no Planet B, despite all the great posturing with making Mars home. That would take centuries.

We have only Earth, and we must protect it and show good stewardship, because at the end of the day, if things go bad here, there is nowhere else.

Thomas Jefferson, for all his innumerable faults said that “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.”
Love remains our greatest form of resistance.

Even in this Orwellian world that is becoming our reality.

To my Native American brothers and sisters, I stand beside you as you fight for your God given right to clean water and oppose the black snake called the Dakota Access Pipeline.

To my sisters fighting for your right to control your body and not to be discriminated against or harrassed, I stand amongst you and affirm your inherent rights. To quote a meme I saw based on Hamilton: An American Musical, We will never be truly free, until those with vaginas have the same rights as you and me.

To my black brothers and sisters who face percussion now that Trump has decided to fortify the police, your lives matter. All Lives can not be said to matter until we come and accept that black lives matter. Your lives matter and nothing any Neo-Nazi can say or believe will reduce it.
As the administration moves to make you exercizing your constitutional right to vote, we will join you in the streets in this continued Civil Rights Movement.

To my Latin American brothers and sisters, your rights too must be protected. You are human and you matter. You are valued and loved. We are united in your struggle by this spirit of resistance.

To my refugee brothers and sisters, fleeing your home countries because of war, famine and repression, I know that you did not wants to leave your home and stay in a foreign nation by choice. Circumstances have forced this. My immigrant brethren, you are safe and people to us. Hate will not win, and we shall overcome, as the old hymn says.

To my brothers and sisters in the LGBTI community, you are human beings and your sexuality does not reduce that.

To my Muslim brothers and sisters, it’s going to be fine. Even as this so called Alt-Right vilifies you, Trump attempts to create a registry for you and moves towards internment camps for you, we see your humanity. I see the good in you and that you are not a terrorist.

To my Jewish brothers and sisters who see the rise of Neo-Nazis and shudder as they remember what happened some generations ago, we see you. We cannot allow history to repeat itself on our watch. Besides the fact that history has its eyes on us, we will resist an raise our voices.

In the end, what story will our great grandchildren tell when they speak of us and the time we had?

I want our story to be one of Resistance. One in which we as the world say with one voice Hate will not win.

Resistance.

Is our secret safe tonight

And are we out of sight

Or will our world come tumbling down?

Will they find our hiding place

Is this our last embrace

Or will the walls start caving in?
(It could be wrong, could be wrong) But it should have been right

(It could be wrong, could be wrong) To let our hearts ignite

(It could be wrong, could be wrong) Are we digging a hole?

(It could be wrong, could be wrong) This is out of control
(It could be wrong, could be wrong) It could never last

(It could be wrong, could be wrong) Must erase it fast

(It could be wrong, could be wrong) But it could have been right

(It could be wrong, could be…)
Love is our resistance

They’ll keep us apart and they won’t stop breaking us down

Hold me

Our lips must always be sealed
If we live a life in fear

I’ll wait a thousand years

Just to see you smile again
Kill your prayers for love and peace

You’ll wake the thought police

We can’t hide the truth inside

The night has reached its end

We can’t pretend

We must run

We must run

It’s time to run

Take us away from here

Protect us from further harm

Resistance
